Serengeti Great wildebeest Migration
The Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth
What is the Great Migration?
The Great Migration is an annual, circular movement of herbivores through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing pastures and water. This epic journey covers a distance of around 1,200 miles and is fueled by seasonal changes in the region’s rainfall and vegetation. As the herds move through the Serengeti, they face numerous challenges, from predators like lions and crocodiles to treacherous river crossings.
The Migration Calendar:
January to March (Calving Season – Southern Serengeti):
The migration begins in the southern plains of the Serengeti, where wildebeest gather in the thousands to give birth. This is the calving season, with around 8,000 calves born every day. The abundance of newborns attracts predators, making this a prime time for predator-prey interaction. Watch lions, cheetahs, and hyenas hunt among the herds, creating a thrilling wildlife spectacle.April to May (The Long Rains – Moving North):
As the southern plains dry up, the herds begin their journey northward, heading toward the central and western Serengeti. The landscape becomes lush and green with the rains, offering excellent game viewing and fewer tourists.June to July (Grumeti River Crossing – Western Corridor):
The herds face their first major obstacle—the Grumeti River. Wildebeest and zebras must brave the crocodile-infested waters, making for heart-pounding scenes as they risk their lives to reach the greener pastures on the other side.August to September (Mara River Crossing – Northern Serengeti):
The most dramatic and famous stage of the migration occurs when the herds attempt to cross the Mara River into Kenya’s Masai Mara. The Mara River is a perilous challenge, with swift currents and large Nile crocodiles lying in wait. This iconic moment is considered one of the most thrilling wildlife experiences, offering unmatched opportunities for photography and wildlife observation.October to December (Return to the Serengeti):
After grazing in the lush plains of the Masai Mara, the herds gradually start moving back south into the Serengeti, completing the annual cycle. By December, they return to the southern Serengeti to begin calving again, and the migration continues its endless circle.
